Felix Muhrhofer´s Duke series features uncomplicated constructions out of corroded steel which immediately remind of the simplistic designs of 1920s Oceanliners. The material with it´s surface texture become the defining element, a tradition which is also found in the great Bauhaus designs, to which Muhrhofer also feel a great intellectual closeness. The simple elegance of the frame is complemented by the exalted structure and color of the sunken in Terrazzo top. It is here where the design concepts clash and merge into a new approach. The polished Terrazzo surface joins the velvety steel and the matte tone of the frame highlights the colors and forms of the set in found pebbels.
The tables of the series are in ever which way combinable, coming in different heights and widths but the pieces still manage to shine for themselves.
About the designer:
Felix Muhrhofer, born in Vienna in 1975, studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and in Barcelona at Elisava Industrial/Interior Design. After graduation he set up his first workshop in a friend’s garage, where he focused on the practical implementation of his designs and checked their tactile quality, esthetic appearance as well as their feasibility. Felix Muhrhofer expanded his craftsmanship in skills like welding, soldering, woodturning, casting and grinding stones to experimentally develop new methods of form and shape finding with this knowledge. In fact, innovative processing techniques and material combinations emerged from these techniques leading to several patent applications.
One of the first products manufactured in small series was a kitchen module system with terrazzo countertops and sinks made from one piece. In order to test their practicality, Felix Muhrhofer actually founded Vienna’s first cooking club (Kühnplatz in the district Wieden). It became a unique space for creative exchange over the past 12 years. In this time, he created the so-called “Magic Wall”, an active magnetic terrazzo wall for the vertical storage of all ferrous items such as pots, knives, pans, keys.
Moreover, Felix Muhrhofer designed the stage set for the inauguration of Muth in 2012 (Vienna’s new venue for music and theatre and the Vienna Boys’ choir concert hall, “Wiener Sängerknaben”). He was further in charge of the internationally known R&Bar architecture as well as for the Obizzi showroom and workshop of the goldsmith Stefanie Derhaschnig which opened in 2018.
The former garage workshop turned into a new creative spot, after moving twice, he settled down in a courtyard building in Vienna (Nußdorf). However, the place is bursting at the seams due to the growing demand and he is again searching for a new space for his creations.
