The contrast of cane wrapped handles with smooth brass is typical of the designs of Carl Auböck II during the 1950s. Both practical and deeply tactile, these cane-wrapped accents reduce tarnishing, add grip to the touch points of the coffee set, and have only deepened in colour over years of use.
Even today, cane is a recurring material in the Werkstätte Carl Auböck and dates back to the 1940s and 50s. In an interview, the current head of the workshop, Carl Auböck IV discussed the humble origins of the medium. ‘It was rather inexpensive’, he recalled, ‘in the 1940s and 50s, it was common to make virtue of necessity (…) low-cost material can be enhanced by using high-end processing’. This three-piece coffee service fully encapsulates this sentiment, in which the tightly wrapped cane accents not only enhance the appearance of the set, but the tactility of its use.
The coffee service displays even patination across all three pieces. The cane-work on the milk jug and sugar caddy is in excellent condition and there is only a small piece of cane missing from the lower half of the coffee pot handle.
