Throughout its depth brown walnut color tone and its straight design this walnut coffee table with four legs created in the circle of Josef Frank and designed by Felix Augenfeld circa 1927 features a sophisticated appearance and could be perfectly paired with Contemporary interiors as well as Antique or Mid Century Modern items.
Felix Augenfeld (1893-1984) guided an architecture bureau Hofman & Augenfeld.
He designed 1920 a desk chair for Sigmund Freud, Freud´s daughter placed this order.
Felix Augenfeld was a pupil from Adolf Loos, but he loved the philosophy from Oskar Strnad, Oskar Wlach and Josef Frank and Walter Sobotka. This tendency was called Wiener Wohnen and started between the two wars.
The subject of the philosophy “Wiener Wohnen” features white walls, solo color fabrics except flower fabric by Josef Frank and movable, freestanding furnitures like this circular coffee table.
Let us pop in the curriculum from Felix Augenfeld:
Felix Augenfeld closed his bureau in Vienna in 1938. First he went to London and later to New York.
The most important clients in New York were the family Heller, Ernst Hammerschlag and the Thonet Brothers for example.
He designed for the family Heller in cooperation with Simon Schmiderer “la reine Candy store” in the Madison Avenue. A further big order was a residential around the Central Park.
Later times Felix Augenfeld worked for the well-known furniture makers like Knoll and Thonet.
This presented coffee table shows very similar features like the design for the flat “Family Painsipp” in Vienna, circa 1927.
