A well carved wooden portrait bust of a young girl wearing an elaborate headdress carved by a Balinese artist around the mid 20th century. The bust is carved from a single piece if wood, possibly sandal wood, and is well carved with good detail portraying the bear busted girl wearing a large Balinese style pierced headdress made up of flowers and leaves and wearing large studs in her ears. She wears a carved ornate ornamental cloth draped around her neck and is finely carved with a rich brown patina. The base has a hand chip carved finish and the bust has a written mark applied to the base.
Originating from Bali, Indonesia many of these carvings were popular with tourists during the early to mid 20th century as Bali became a destination with tourists. With this came a demand for a wide range of local art and sculpture with a large number of local artisans turning their hands to carving busts which varied in quality and detail. They make wonderful display pieces and this is a good example of its type.
