Late 19th century
Bessarabian kilims originate from Eastern Europe; from an area that is now Moldova, North Western Romania and South Eastern Ukraine Kilim production in these areas can be traced back to the 18th century and continues today in a limited capacity; the diverse cultural heritage of the region has inspired designs that are unique The combination of colour and bold design has made Bessarabian kilims very popular with collectors and interior designers in recent years
This example has a large scale floral design, the eight floral sprays or flowering shrubs are beautifully drawn, and really stand out against the black ground The very soft ivory / grey border has a colourful linked flower and leaf design, this frames the kilim really well This kilim is a real statement piece and would make an outstanding furnishing item
The kilim is in excellent original condition with no wear or repairs This kilim is woven using the ‘interlocking weave’ technique, this makes it stronger and suitable for floor use
