This finely crafted console is Austrian, circa 1830-1840. Designed as a flat mahogany surface richly inlaid in holly, fruitwood, and ebony the piece is further worked by careful sand burning creating a full trompe l’oeil articulated shading. The classical lyre motif combined with the illusion of concave reeded molding, acanthus and star boss-like inlays that resemble metal mounts creates a rich and decorative neoclassical piece. While heavy in style the mirrored back creates a deep sense of positive and negative space lightening the whole table. Cabinet making and extravagant inlaid areas such as this had become fashionable in France during the reign of Charles X and spread throughout the continent. The marble top while old has had a crack and been professionally repaired (see figure 4) but does not show up much even in photos.
